An exhibition of Latvian artists opens in Baku

An exhibition of Latvian artists called “Different Seas. One World” opens at the Heydar Aliyev Center, November 26.

 

Vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva attended the exhibition.

 

The exhibition is organized in Azerbaijan within the framework of the Days of Latvia held under the slogan of “Comprehending Latvia”. Works by well-known Latvian artists Aleksey Naumov, Kristaps Zarins and Andris Vitolins are displayed at the exhibition.

 

Speaking at the ceremony, first deputy director of the Heydar Aliyev Center Adil Karimli said that the Center has so far hosted up to 30 exhibitions. This exhibition, where over 30 works by three Latvian artists are displayed, is of significance in terms of introducing the country’s art. A. Karimli thanked everyone who has contributed to the exhibition’s organization, including Latvia’s Ministry of Economy, embassy of this country in Azerbaijan, and the Art Academy of Latvia.

 

Latvia’s minister of economy Mrs Dana Reizniece-Ozola, greeting the guests on behalf of the ministry she represented, said: “As is known from the exhibition’s name, the topic “Different Seas. One World” will bring together two different countries - Latvia, which is situated on the Baltic Sea shore, and Azerbaijan, situated on the Caspian Sea shoe and being its pearl. I think that everywhere art arouses interest in people that comprehend it. I’m hopeful, looking at this works of a landscape genre, people will find peace. I know that Azerbaijanis are very dynamic people. Looking at these paintings, they will find both comfort and, at the same time, some excitement”. The Latvian minister expressed confidence the exhibition would leave pleasant impression.

 

Ambassador of Latvia to Azerbaijan Yuris Maklakos said he took proud in this exhibition’s being held at the Heydar Aliyev Center. Mentioning his three-month activity in Azerbaijan as an ambassador, the Latvian diplomat, noting that this was his first coming to the Center and that it had made a great impression on him, said: “In our daily life, we encounter a number of processes. But I think we should not forget art. This exhibition will acquaint Azerbaijanis with works of Latvian artist more closely. There will be more such exhibitions in future ”.

 

Aleksey Naumov, one of the artists whose works are displayed at the exhibition, the rector of the Art Academy of Latvia, speaking at the opening ceremony, said this exhibition, which comprises a large volume of works, has already been to European countries, USA and Hong-Kong. He said he was hopeful the works displayed at the exhibition would pleasantly impress Azerbaijanis.

 

Then the attendees familiarized themselves with the exhibition.

 

Aleksey Naumov is a well-known master of landscape and an eminent representative of the modern Latvian plein-air painting. At the moment, he is the rector of the Art Academy of Latvia. He had over 60 individual exhibitions held, and was a participant of more than 40 joint exhibitions.

 

Kristaps Zarins is a vice-principal of the Art Academy of Latvia, and a professor. He had a number of exhibitions held in Latvia and other countries, participated in joint exhibitions. His works are preserved in various museums of Latvia and Russia, and in private collections in European countries.

 

Andris Vitolins is known as one of the representatives of the industrial painting. He mainly depicts human-made objects, however, landscapes have their own place in his creativity. So far, he inaugurated more than 10 private exhibitions, and was a participant of more than 40 joint exhibition. He is an associate professor of the Art Academy of Latvia.

 

The exhibition of Latvian artists will run until the end of February 2016.
