President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva become familiar with the restoration works carried out on “Shirin Su” Bathhouse in Shusha

On May 10, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva were on a visit to Shusha city.

President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva became familiar with the restoration works carried out on “Shirin Su” Bathhouse in Shusha.

Assistant to the President Anar Alakbarov informed that the restoration works on the historical “Shirin Su” Bathhouse have been carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Reflecting national architectural traditions, the bathhouse’s one-storied building is, by its layout composition, in a rectangular form. The bathhouse is entered on the list of immovable historical and cultural monuments of country importance, and will be restored keeping its historical appearance.

The city of Shusha - the cultural capital of Azerbaijan – is rich in ancient cultural and architectural monuments. Each of the 17 blocks of Shusha had their own bathhouse, mosque and spring. Located in Mardinli block of the city, the “Shirin Su” Bathhouse was built in 1880. In former times, salt water on the territory was used in other bathhouses of the city. And this bathhouse was provided with potable water brought to Shusha by Khan’s daughter Khurshidbanu Natavan. This is why the bathhouse was called the Shirin Su (potable water) Bathhouse. After measurement works carried out in 1986, basic restoration and repair works were performed based on design documents prepared by architect Adalat Mammadov. The “Shirin Su” Bathhouse had functioned until Shusha was occupied by Armenians on May 8, 1992. During the time of occupation, this bathhouse too, as all our other monuments, was destroyed by Armenians.
