The activities of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in the social field
Speaking of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s activities in social sphere, the following
projects should be mentioned in particular: construction of the water pipe-line in Lokbatan
settlement, Garadagh District of Baku, that enabled to improve water supply of 20 thousand
local residents; erection of a 16-apartment residential building for the internally displaced
families in Shamakhy; and the residential area for veterans of the Garabagh war, handicapped
persons, low-income and large families in the town of Salyan. The residential community-to-be
will be supplied with heating system, household utilities and other utilities.
Infrastructure projects accomplished by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation during the period
of 2004-2011 include construction of roads in Zira, Bina, Qala and other settlements of Baku’s
Khazar District, renovation of power transmitter (substation) in Bina, improvement of water
supply in Baku’s suburban areas, and laying out parks. To facilitate landscaping activities,
garbage collection and area improvement works, a number of water carts, dump trucks, garbage
vehicles, graders, loaders, tractors and multifunctional excavators were procured by the Heydar
Aliyev Foundation and handed over to the relevant local executive authorities. The Foundation
was also involved in upgrading areas adjacent to religious centers, historic and cultural
landmarks through landscape gardening and recreation facilities in the newly laid parks.
Charitable actions are regularly arranged by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation with a view to
facilitating integration of institutionalized children into the society and increasing efficiency of
their leisure-time. In the framework of these actions and campaigns, the Foundation makes
donations to children homes and boarding schools, with concerts and other entertainment events
arranged on a regular basis.
New Year and Novruz (Spring Holiday) celebrations are annually conducted by the
Foundation for the most outstanding school students, as well as for institutionalized children,
kids from refugee and IDP families, orphans and those deprived of parental care. Besides,
special gifts are provided to children homes and boarding schools in Eid al-Adha and Eid al-
Fitr.
To increase the scope of vision for the school children and stir up their zeal to studies and
education, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation arranges trips abroad for high achievers, contest
winners, orphans and children deprived of parental care. Meanwhile, broad opportunities are
created for children form foreign countries to visit Azerbaijan and get better familiar with the
country’s versatile culture and storied past. E.g. the Foundation sponsored trips of the
Azerbaijani school children to Germany, the Kingdom of Belgium, France, Georgia, the
Kingdom of the Netherlands and Romania, while the school children from Georgia, Romania
and the Russian Federation got a chance to visit Azerbaijan.
Meanwhile, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation pays a particular attention to facilitating the
integration of handicapped people into the society, as well as exposing and developing their
gifts. Following the Foundation’s nomination, 15 handicapped inventors were awarded by the
World Intellectual Property Organization in October 2007.
