GAVAL
Gaval is a percussive instrument which has a lengthy tradition of use in the Azerbaijani music. According to the medieval poetry and
art, gaval was frequently used at the royal court. It was an inalienable piece of accompaniment for the khanende, traditional performers
of mugham, the art included in the UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List as of 2003. Typically, gaval was manufactured of walnut
with membrane crafted of tanned sturgeon skin. The wooden frame was adorned by copper rings from inside.
