“Azerbaijani Carpets in Art” Exhibition in Cannes

On 15 July 2015, opening of the exhibition “Azerbaijani Carpets in Art” took place in the Palace of Festivals in Cannes.

 

Azerbaijan’s First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva and family members attended the opening ceremony. 

 

Works by such Azerbaijani artists as Latif Karimov, Vugar Muradov, Butunay Hagverdiyev and Elchin Valiyev – works of modern and pop-art based on national carpet sketches, as well as illustrations were displayed at the exhibition.

 

7 works by young artist Elchin Valiyev have been demonstrated at the exhibition. Made specificallyfor the exhibition “Azerbaijani Carpets in Art”, these works are distinguished for their originality. Made by oil paint and having carpet motifs, these works make a live impression on the visitors, using 3D effects. 

 

Carpet sketches created by People’s Artist, eminent master of carpet Latif Karimov in 1969-1970 were displayed at the exhibition. 15 works presented to the exhibition were demonstrated for the first time. 

 

Presented for the first time, a carpet illustration of well-known artist Butunay Hagverdiyev gave life to Azerbaijani carpet ornaments. Made of wood, the illustration is distinguished for 3D effects. Presented along with the sketches of Latif Karimov, the work shows the history and development of the national carpet-making art, and its application in modern art.

 

A video installation reflecting carpet motifs depicted in works of 15-16th century world artists were also demonstrated at the exhibition.

 

7 works of well-known artist Vugar Muradov in portrait and landscape genres, made using oil paint, presented national carpet ornaments in a unique fashion.

 

In general, works displayed at the exhibition “Azerbaijani Carpets in Art” were distinguished for being exhibited for the first time. Held with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the exhibition gave comprehensive information to visitors about the history, the present day of the Azerbaijani carpet making art, and its vast dissemination throughout the world. 

 

The exhibition had been open to public since July 16 and continued until July 31.
