President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the inauguration of the historical Choel Gala mosque and spring in Shusha after restoration, March 27.
It was noted that the restoration works in the mosque was performed by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, enjoying the support of PASHA Holding. The restoration works started in 2023.
Most of the flooring stones in the mosque’s backyard that had been deformed were removed and reinforced by restoring furnishing stones. The front door and the hand rails on the fence were made with decorations characteristic of the Garabagh architecture.
Destroyed parts of the mosque façade - built from local stone - were fully restored, while the cross-bar and dome stones that were posing danger were removed and replaced with new ones. A balcony created as a result of assembling the inter-floor wooden covering was completed with a glassed gallery.
The mosque is comprised of the entrance, the prayer hall and auxiliary rooms. Unlike other mosques of Shusha, the entrance here was ensured from the right side by stone stairs. There is a passage-way from the open lobby to the room and the prayer hall.
Stones used in the construction of the mosque were restored, while the alter was reconstructed and ayahs from Qur’an and patterns were engraved on.
The Choel Gala Spring nearby the mosque, which related to the 19th century, was also restored. Quadrangular, this spring was constructed in the style of the nearby mosques. The spring’s original architectural style was preserved in the restoration process; its structure was reinforced and original view restored. The Choel Gala Mosque was one of the 17 mosques operating in the city of Shusha in the 19th century. This historical monument was constructed by Kerbalayi Safikhan Garabaghi in the 19th century.
