Special meeting of the Milli Majlis devoted to the 90th jubilee of Heydar Aliyev

Special meeting of the Milli Majlis devoted to the 90th jubilee of national leader Heydar Aliyev was held on May 7.

Azerbaijan’s First Lady, deputy of the Milli Majlis Mehriban Aliyeva attended the meeting.

Mehriban Aliyeva delivered a speech at the meeting.

Speech by Mehriban Aliyeva:

- Respected colleagues, in a few days we will celebrate the 90th jubilee of great person Heydar Aliyev.

Great political person, founder of the modern Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev will always live in every Azerbaijani’s heart with his philosophy of Azerbaijanism, statehood ideas and gigantic works.  Heydar Aliyev was a wise, strong and courageous person with gigantic intellect and unconquerable will. At the same time, as a member of his family, I would like to say that he was a very kind and well-disposed person. Although he had faced injustice and betrayal during different periods of his life, he was very simple and fair in relations with common people. Just in this hall people that he had once promoted attacked him.  But after being elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1993, he pardoned most of them and, with his ability to pardon, he once more proved his greatness.

The Amnesty act we are going to discuss today is actually an act of pardoning. Adoption of such an act on the eve of Heydar Aliyev’s 90th jubilee has great symbolic character.

Dear friends, I believe that a lot of things may be changed for the better in this world by pardoning, showing kind intention and mercy. Just the ideas and principles of humanism have centuries-old preserved the feeling of humanity in people.

The Amnesty act proposed for your consideration stipulates pardoning of some 9000 persons, of which more than 2000 are expected to be released from prisons. I hope those released from prisons will understand their faults, join their families, find their place in our society and never repeat such acts again.

Respected colleagues, I call on you to support this decision and thank you for your attention.
