Heydar Aliyev Foundation and UNICEF hosted Round Table on anemia and thalassemia at Baku Business Center, August 13.
Ilgar Mustafayev, representative of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, said the Foundation has implemented a wide range of successful projects in the field of health protection for the last 6 years. Highly equipped Thalassemia Center with the latest advances and techniques was built in Azerbaijan as part of the Foundation`s For Life Without Thalassemia Program. Creation of specialized medical center and blood bank, development of voluntary donor service to provide safe and high quality blood to thalassemia-affected children, enlightenment of population and enhancement of cooperation with some state fighting thalassemia to prevent spreading of the disease, training of high qualified personnel has been achieved.
Delegate of the Health Ministry Soltan Aliyev talked of measures the Ministry takes to fight the disease.
Protection of public health is a top priority for Azerbaijani state, according to Hadi Rajabli, MP. Important steps are taken for the past years towards development of health system in the country, strengthening the logistics, personnel and infrastructure in the field. Projects performed aim protection of population’s health. Several state programmes and laws are adopted to protect public health.
Head of UNICEF Baku Office Mark Hereward highly valued achievements and projects realized on the initiative of Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO, MP, in the field of public health.
It was noted in the event more than a half of newborns under 23 months are anemic in Azerbaijan and the level of spreading of the disease among those under 6-57 months is 39%. The disease is a severe danger to babies, juniors and pregnant women and the first reason to maternal death.
