Azerbaijan actively promotes breastfeeding

Benefit of breastfeeding for mothers and babies, implementation of active agitation in this field was the major subject to discussions in the national conference ‘Breastfeeding in Azerbaijan: Problems and Solution’ held November 25 at Baku Business Center by Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNICEF and Health Ministry.


Heydar Aliyev Foundation spokesman Ilqar Mustafayev informed in the event of the projects the Foundation performs for children, talked of the use of breastfeeding for mothers and babies.

 

He mentioned early breastfeeding significantly decreases the child death. Chance of breastfed babies to survive in the first months is 6 times higher in comparison with non-breastfed infants. By the international studies, breastfeeding protects children from some diseases, including severe respiratory infections and anemia.  

 

Talking of advantages of breast milk, UNICEF Azerbaijan Office Head Mark Hereward noted the risk of mothers feeding their babies breast milk to get oncologic diseases is low. Underlining this issue is a priority to UNICEF, he stressed actions of Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

 

Milli Mejlis Social Policy Committee Chairman Hady Rajabli said sourced from the world practice a bill on this issue was prepared in 2003, emphasized the works Heydar Aliyev Foundation carries out in field of breastfeeding.

 

Noting the importance of the conference, the MP said the result of discussions can bring to supplements and changes to the law.

 

MP Ganira Pashayeva spoke about public awareness of breastfeeding, the role of the press in enlightenment. Noting necessity of social reels and advertisement, she suggested posting them gratis. She stated Heydar Aliyev Foundation and its president Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva pays special attention to this problem.

 

Saying child protection has always been the focus of attention, MP Musa Guliyev mentioned significance of agitation and enlightenment. 

 

Deputy Chairwoman of Family, Woman and Child Problems State Committee Aynur Sofiyeva noted breastfeeding demands a complete approach and joint activity.

 

MP Malahat Hasanova stressed such forums should also be held in regions of the country, suggested arranging parliament auditions.

 

Director of the K.Farajova Scientific Research Pediatrics Institute Nasib Guliyev talked of reasons for breastfeeding problems,1-2% of which, according to him, are objective, 98-99% subjective. He mentioned breast milk is a unique feed protecting an infant and a mother from diseases and building a communication between them.
