President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva and Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura visit Azerilme LTD

In frame of his visit to Azerbaijan Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura and a group of participants of conference “Addressing Literacy Challenges in Europe with Sub-Regional Focus: Building Partnerships and Promoting Innovative Approaches” held in Baku visited Azerilme LTD on May 15.

 

Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador, MP, warmly greeted the visitors.

 

Director General of UNESCO was informed carpet-making is one of the most ancient folk trades in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani carpets are displayed in a lot of museums in the world as one of the most unique exhibits.

 

Then, ceremony took place to cut carpet ‘Sheikh Sefi’, making of which started in September 2007. Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura and First Lady of Azerbaijan Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva cut the carpet.

 

Guests were informed the carpet, original of which is stored in London and belongs to Tebriz carpet-making school, covers 37 sq.m, includes 9,25 mln loops.  

 

Koichiro Matsuura expressed his fascination for the carpet.

 

Then, talk was continued at the tea table in ‘Magic ornaments’ Gallery created at the initiative of Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva and displaying the Azerbaijani carpets made over a century ago.

 

Director General of UNESCO expressed delight of seeing beauty of the Azerbaijani carpets, highly valued protection of this ancient folk trade in the country under leadership of Mehriban Aliyeva.
