Translation of documents brought to Baku from Vatican’s confidential archive starts

Translation of the documents brought last December 7 to Baku from Vatican’s confidential archive has been started.

Director of the Translation and Information Department of the Muhammad Fuzuli Institute of Manuscripts of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Farid Alakbarli said the list of the documents to be translated has been made. The experts started first to translate the documents in Latin. These documents belong to XV-XVI centuries, the Sefevi State. The translation will take much time. These documents are ancient and require very qualitative translation.

Mr Alakbarli said that the process of retrieving the Azerbaijani documents is underway in Vatican’s archives. Vatican’s local experts are carrying out the retrieving process sponsored by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The half of 40 manuscripts has already been retrieved. F.Alakbarli said researches of Azerbaijani documents would continue in Vatican’s archives, but the details on the start of researches and periods they will cover are unknown.

The documents on Azerbaijan found in Vatican’s archives consist of 1000 pages, including the letters from the rulers of states of Elkhani, Atabey, Aghgoyunlu, Garagoyunlu, Sefevi and Gajar to Vatican and the replies to them, the letters from Vatican to the rulers of above-mentioned states and their replies to Vatican, the secret reports of various missionaries on political streams in Azerbaijan and other documents.
