Employees of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Heydar Aliyev Centre participate in a blood donation action

Due to the fact that the blood reserve for children suffering from thalassemia, haemophilia and leucosis diseases has decreased during the special quarantine regime applied in the country in connection with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, employees of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Heydar Aliyev Centre participated in the blood donation action held on April 11.

 

The blood donation action aimed at both supporting children suffering from blood diseases and to draw the public’s attention to this social issue.

 

Director of the National Haematology and Transfusiology Centre Valeh Huseynov informed that some 1500 people are suffering from hereditary blood diseases in Azerbaijan. At the same time, citizens undergoing surgery and other operations also need blood: “As is well known, the quarantine regime has been applied in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to shortage of blood in blood banks. As always, our people has been showing unity and solidarity in these difficult days. Numerous actions are held, and our citizen donate their blood to those suffering from hereditary blood diseases, as well as to those in need of blood. First Vice-president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva has put forward an initiative for the solution of the issue. Following this initiative, a blood donation action was held at the Heydar Aliyev Centre. We call on other entities too to join this initiative”.

 

V.Huseynov mentioned that the National Haematology and Transfusiology Centre has 8 regional blood banks in the regions. The National Haematology and Transfusiology Centre has been providing its support to regional blood centres. He expressed a hope such actions will be continued.

 

The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been holding significant events in the country in connection with thalassemia issue, including the project “For Life without Thalassemia” since 2005. The Thalassemia Centre was created following the initiative of the Foundation in order to organize a specialised medical institution and a blood bank, train highly qualified personnel, as well as provide children suffering from thalassemia with safe and quality blood components, and medical service.
