The Heydar Aliyev Foundation restores the bas-relief “Meeting of Pope Leo I with Hun Emperor Atilla” in the Saint Peter Church in Vatican

The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has completed works on restoration of the bas-relief “Meeting of Pope Leo I with Hun Emperor Atilla” in the Saint Peter Church in Vatican. The project has been implemented under the contract concluded in February 2019 between the Foundation and the Saint Peter Church.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva became familiar with the Basilica of the Saint Peter Church, where the bas-relief “Meeting of Pope Leo I with Hun Emperor Atilla” is located, within their visit to Vatican. This temple is one of the most famous examples of the Italian architecture of Renaissance. The Saint Peter Basilica is also a famous place of pilgrimage and ceremonies. Pope usually holds several religious ceremonies, over the course of a year, in the Basilica or on the square before it.

The projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation have been highly appreciated by the Holy See. These works demonstrate the contribution made by the Foundation to global values to the whole world. Moreover, these projects show the importance our country has been attaching to monuments and shrines of different religions. And all these strengthen the position and place of Azerbaijan - as a country loyal to multicultural values and promoting such values - in the world, as well as its role in building dialogue between religions.
