The Heydar Aliyev Foundation provides diabetics under 18 with insulin

Persons up to 18 with diabetes across the country are provided with insulin preparations and syringe-pens in the framework of the project “The highest care for children with diabetes” by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Necessary medications are delivered to diabetics through the Azerbaijan Diabetes Association in the framework of the project being implemented following the Foundation’s President Mehriban Aliyeva.

Taking close part in removing healthcare issues of the population, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been implementing the project “The highest care for children with diabetes” since December 2004.

Children and juveniles are provided with syringe-pens on a regular basis with a view to supporting the state’s care for persons suffering from diabetes, under the project.

Chairperson of the Azerbaijan Diabetes Association Momunat Omarova noted that the world’s diabetes associations are celebrating this year the 100th anniversary of discovering insulin, saying that “Despite the fact that insulin has been around for a century, insulin provision in the world is not on a proper level. From this standpoint, provision children in our country with quality “Tresiba” insulin is of great importance. Life conditions of about 1500 children were improved over the course of the last year. Tresiba helps to prevent sharp reduction in the amount of insulin in blood, i.e. occurrence of hypoglycaemia. Provision children with Tresiba insulin is an obvious example of care shown by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and its president Mehriban Aliyeva. Along with provision with insulin, both parents and children receive information about diabetes, as well as how to control themselves, in the framework of the project. This is not the first project the Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been implementing in connection with diabetes. First in Azerbaijan, children were provided with syringe-pens by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. I want to thank, on behalf of all children with diabetes, their parents, and the Azerbaijan Diabetes Association, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and its president Mehriban Aliyeva.”

Head of the Therapeutics Department of the Azerbaijan State Physicians’ Professional Development Institute, chairperson of the Azerbaijan Endocrinology, Diabetology and Therapeutic Instruction Association, doctor of medicine Valeh Mirzazade said that not all patients know they had diabetes, but diabetes in children is a major problem: “Before insulin was discovered, children with diabetes under the age of 10 did not live longer than one year. And the diet prescribed enabled to prolong this term to two years. After the insulin was discovered, the likelihood of children’s chance to live increased. It was known that some people who had lived 95 years, 85 years of them they lived by using insulin. Insulin helps people to live without after-effects, and for long. In order to live without after-effects, control of glucose in the blood is important, which is possible by insulin. Children may develop serious insulin shortage. Such children have either no insulin or with a very little amount. Provision of such children with insulin is important. There are short-term and long-term insulins. Short-term insulin is used during the meals, while long-term insulin helps maintain sufficient insulin level throughout the day. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has ensured that children suffering from diabetes in the country are provided with the most developed insulin that have passed the most serious inspections. These insulins reduce the likelihood of occurrence of hypoglycaemic conditions during the day, and night. I want to note that sharp decrease of glucose in the blood may result in death, or grave complications. We thank the Heydar Aliyev Foundation for the provision children with insulin in order to prevent such cases from happening”.
