Mehriban Aliyeva and 2020 Olympic Games

We are ready to host Olympic Games – Mehriban Aliyeva

Baku has presented its bid to host 2020 Olympic Games to the Association of National Olympic Committees' General Assembly in Moscow. The peculiarity of the application according to members of the bidding committee is to connect the western and eastern cultures.

Behind this attempt is the charming first Lady of Azerbaijan Ms Mehriban Aliyeva, who stated “Our goal to host 2020 Olympic Games enjoys the support of the government and 95% of the Azerbaijani population. Our capital is a live cosmopolitan city, we have a rich historical heritage, and here the East is connected to the West.” Sports facilities on the idea of bidding committee of the Baku-2020 will be located in close proximity to the Olympic village and the main media center. The entire area of the Games will be divided into several clusters, combining several sports facilities.

Aliyeva added, “Despite the fact that we have recently begun to participate in the Olympics as a separate state, we are actively investing in sports infrastructure in the country. We understand that the Olympic Games require political and financial investment, and we are ready for it, because we really want to hold these competitions.”

Five cities including Baku, Doha (Qatar), Madrid (Spain), Istanbul (Turkey) and Tokyo (Japan) are bidding to host Olympics 2020. The first presentation of the bids has been held in Moscow. On 14 April, the 10-minute video presentations were demonstrated to the participants of the General Assembly of the Association of the National Olympic Committee, which involved the sport activists from 204 countries. Though the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee has no direct vote in election of the cities, the opinion of the national Olympic committees is taken seriously by the International Olympic Committee in formation of the short-list of the candidate cities.

The IOC will declare the winner of the bid for hosting 2020 Olympics in Buenos Aires on 7 September 2013.

One hopes that Mehriban Aliyeva will succeed due to her nobility, intellect and charm. She is ranked the top among all First Ladies in the world. She is a woman with a mission whose seriousness demands hard word and dedication.

In 1995, she established the Friends of Azerbaijani Culture Foundation. She established, in 2004, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The HAF builds more schools than Azerbaijan's Ministry of Education, more hospitals than the Ministry of Health, and conducts more cultural events than the Ministry of Culture. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has also implemented projects outside Azerbaijan, including support to renovation works at the Louvre Museum, the Palace of Versailles and the Notre Dame Church of Strasbourg.

Mehriban Aliyeva became a designated UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, to honor her work promoting oral and musical traditions.

In Azerbaijan's 2005 parliamentary elections, she was elected to the National Assembly of Azerbaijan.

Mrs. Aliyeva has received many awards for her humanitarian work, including France's prestigious Legion d'Honneur, honoring what French President Nicolas Sarkozy called her outstanding service and loyalty to France.

In 2010, UNESCO's Director-General Irina Bokova awarded Aliyeva the UNESCO Mozart Medal “for strengthening the intercultural dialogue.”

She's the angel of nobility, beauty and intellect, tall

most tender to people, educating them, caring to all

I'm struck with her strong will, deriving from her root,

People adore her human nature, thrown under her foot

She's the intellect, charming brain, the pride of East, West,

She's the legend of all time, the leader feme, she's the beset,

Lifting people high has been her mission, eradicating neglect,

O Lord elevate her, bless her soul, command her due respect.
