Turkish press writes about the events associated with pereparation for Baku-2015 and presentation of the First European Games

The Turkish media has allocated wide coverage for the preparation works for the First European Games to be held in 2015 in Baku. The country’s press writes about the European Games to be held for the first time, and measures taken in Azerbaijan, which will hosted the event.

 

It is noted in the material that over 6000 sportsmen from 49 countries will compete on 20 types of sport in the games to be organized during 12-28 June 2015: “It will create new excitement in Europe and the Games to be held every four years will give sportsmen a chance to try themselves before the 2016 Rio-de-Janeiro Summer Olympic Games, and carry the function of a selection phase for some types of sports.”

 

The Turkish media also writes that in Azerbaijan, which has hosted 36 international competitions from taekwondo to gymnastics, from volleyball to football since 2002, the European Championship for Rhythmic Gymnastics was held in 2014. The country, which has been represented with over 200 athletes during the 22-year independence period, has to date gained 26 medals in Olympiads, up to 2000 in European and world championships.


It is emphasized in the materials that the First European Games in Azerbaijan will be held in 21 facilities. To this end, new arenas are constructed and  existing facilities are brought to a ready condition for the Games, by being renovated. “At Baku Crystal Hall, where the “Eurovision-2012”  Song Contest was held, competitions on handball and other enclosed facility sports types  will be held. In addition, an Olympic Village designed for 7300 people is being built in Baku.


The opening ceremony will be held at Baku Olympic Stadium currently under construction. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, heads of FIFA and UEFA Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini participated in the ceremony of laying the foundation”.


The European Games have been founded on 9 December 2012 at the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee in Rome, by a unanimous decision of  the European Olympic committees. At the General Assembly meeting, the right to host the Games was granted to Azerbaijan. By a resolution of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, an Organizing Committee, to be responsible for the holding of the European Olympic Games, was established. The Organizing Committee is headed by Azerbaijan’s First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva.


In the materials placed in the Turkish media, it is also noted that the Heydar Aliyev Foundation has so far organized, in a number of countries, events associated with presentation of the Baku-2015 First European Games, and among them are cited the cities of Cannes, Athens and Berlin.
