A conference called "Black January - A Way Leading Azerbaijan to Independence"

A conference entitled “Black January – A Way Leading Azerbaijan to Independence” took place at the Romanian-American University in Bucharest  in connection with the 25th anniversary of the 20th January Tragedy with the organizational support of Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Bucharest and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, January 20.

 

Rector of the University Ovidiu Folkuts said the Romanian people has always been a support to the people of Azerbaijan and the  university was honoured to hold such events. 

 

Director of the Romanian Representative Office of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Igbal Hajiyev informed the attendees of the event about the 20th January tragedy and mentioned that national leader Heydar Aliyev openly protested to the Soviet leadership, having come, January 21st, to Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative Office in Moscow.

 

Then, the attendees watched a short documentary about the 20th January tragedy.

 

Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Romania Farid Abdullayev talked about the events of January 20 taking place in Baku in 1990, and mentioned that first political and legal assessment of this event was given at the initiative of  Azerbaijani people’s national leader Heydar Aliyev.

 

Former ambassador of Romania to OSCE Paraskiva Badesku, professor of the Dmitrie Kantemir University Constantin Hlihor and chief editor of the magazine “Geopolicy” Vasile Simileanu too delivered a speech and talked about the collapse of the Soviet Union. They mentioned that people wishing to gain independence in a number of nations, including Azerbaijan, have faced great tragedies. Those making a speech noted that Azerbaijan, having left all hardships behind, is on the way of rapid development. 

 

The book-album “20th January – Bloody and Glorious Pages of Our History” – a joint project by the President Administration’s Public and Political Affairs Department and AzerTAc – was presented at the event.
