The International Mugham Centre was inaugurated in Baku

International Mugham Center was inaugurated in the seaside National Park in Baku, December 27.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the event.

Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva cut the ribbon symbolizing the official opening of the Center.

This Center is one of the most important projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation towards protection and propaganda in the world of our national moral values. The construction of the Center was initiated by President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador, MP Mehriban Aliyeva. The decision to establish the Center was made by mugham singers and experts at the “roundtable” meeting with an aim to develop and popularize mugham even more. Afterwards, President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on April 6, 2005 to establish the International Mugham Center in Baku. So, a serious step was taken to set a grandiose monument to mugham, the immortal pattern of ancient cultural heritage of our people that has played invaluable role in formation of Azeri music in base of rich philosophical cornerstone. Inclusion of the Azeri mugham in the UNESCO World Heritage List with unique samples of the universal culture indicates eminence of this monumental art of music.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the Center was attended in August 2005 by President Ilham Aliyev, his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva and UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura. The total area of the three-storey Center is 7,500 sq. meters. The building looks like parts of a tar, the one of ancient Azerbaijani musical instruments. Equipment for the Center was delivered from Italy, Austria, France and Turkey. Over 2000 glasses of different sizes were used in construction.

President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva were familiarized with the Center which has a 350-seat concert hall, club, 80-seat restaurant, classrooms and recording studio, modern ventilation and heat systems.

The President and his spouse viewed busts of renowned Azerbaijani performers and “Ud” restaurant in the corridor looking like the branch of tar.

Then, a concert hall of the Center was officially opened.

The President and the First Lady were warmly welcomed in the hall.

President Ilham Aliyev made a speech at the ceremony.

The ceremony was followed by a mugham concert.

Upon completion of the ceremony, President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva met with Azerbaijani prominent mugham performers and congratulated them on the occasion of the Center’s inauguration.
