Reconstruction of the St. Mary`s Catholic Church in Baku as part of Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s “Azerbaijan – Home to Tolerance” Project has been completed.

Vatican`s apostolic nuncio to Azerbaijan, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, Heydar Aliyev Foundation`s Executive Director Anar Alakbarov and Head of the St. Mary`s Catholic Church Jan Capla inspected the church after the major overhaul.

The reconstruction saw the replacement of the church`s ceiling with art glasses made in religious theme and classical stained-glass window technique, ceramic panel placed on the facade.

The church was reconstructed in accordance with the memo of cooperation signed between Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Catholic community of Rome.

Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been funding reconstruction of religious monuments across the country since 2006. Last year a mosque in Buzovna, catholic and orthodox churches in the country were reconstructed as part of the “Azerbaijan – Home to Tolerance” Project.

Repair-restoration works were carried out last year at the Orthodox Church in the country. The Foundation also funded reconstruction of 5 window lattices at the 14th century-Strasbourg Cathedral in France. These windows of 1320-1340 reflect life of St. Mary and Jesus.
