A group of Garabagh War disabled soldiers and officers are provided with high-tech prostheses with support from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation

Another group of Garabagh War disabled soldiers and officers were provided with high-tech prostheses with support from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Former soldiers and officers who had applied to the Foundation were, first of all, medically examined, and taking into consideration their individual traits, the degree of activity, lifestyle and employment, high quality prostheses were chosen for each of them.

6 out of the Garabagh War invalids were provided with Harmony P3 active vacuum-system prostheses, 1 with Hybrid transfemoral prosthesis with microprocessor control system, and 3 of them being provided with BeBionic 3 upper limb prostheses. These prostheses have technical possibilities ensuring movement together with the amputated part. The user feels the prosthesis as the continuation of the amputated limb, which allows more easy movement.

Garabagh War invalids who have been provided with high-tech prostheses are continuing their employment having returned to active lifestyle, some of them engaging in Paralympic sports types.

In 2017, following the instruction of First Vice-president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva, the project “Provision of soldiers and officers wounded in the April 2016 battles with high-tech prostheses” was implemented. Every soldier and officer wounded in the April 2016 battles who was in need of a prosthesis had been provided with high tech artificial limbs.

Technical specifications of the artificial limbs applied:

“Harmony P3” transtibial prosthesis with active vacuum system, an active vacuum device fixed between the socket and dynamic carbon leg, creates negative pressure between the amputated lower limb and the socket. Due to this negative pressure, the prosthesis and the leg become maximum adapted to each other and, as a result, the leg and the prosthesis become one unit, and the user feels the prosthesis as the continuation of his leg, which allows more easy movement. Another important feature of the negative pressure caused by the active vacuum system is that it improves blood flow in the amputated limb, which ensures quick recovery of the amputated part. The prosthesis with active vacuum system has the features of shock absorbing and rotation. These features ensures that while in movement, the prosthesis adapts to the surface. With a view to ensuring more comfortable use of the prosthesis, a dynamic “Triton” carbon leg, having the feature of pushing each next step, has been fixed.

And the transfemoral prosthesis with microprocessor control system is a knee joint applied in above-knee amputations, improved by engineers of Japan’s “Nabtesco” Company. The specialists, relying on the biomechanical features of the musculoskeletal system, have ensured maximum adaptability of the prosthesis to human’s natural movements. There are 2 highly sensible sensors within the “Hybrid” knee joint. While moving with their help, signals of movement received from the ground ensures adaptation to changing forms of ground surface while in movement, by being transferred to the microprocessor control system.

The “BeBionic 3” bionic transfemoral prosthesis is a bionic hand prosthesis widely applied in the world due its functionality and easiness in use. Signals of movement received from the brain due to 2 sensible electrodes in the prosthesis are transferred, first, to the microprocessor control system and, after being processed there, to the motors fixed in the prosthesis. These motors, by creating free movement of each finger, ensures various movements that the user can benefit from. The wrist joint of the “BeBionic3” hand prosthesis too, having being controlled electronically, can turn 360 degrees. The elbow joint used in above-elbow amputations too have the possibility of opening and closing.
