The Heydar Aliyev Foundation arranges Iftar tables in regions in Ramadan month

On May 22, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation laid an Iftar table in Ramadan month in Shamakhy district. Iftar tables will be arranged in a number of districts by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Some 300 district residents attended the Iftar table laid in Shamakhy district’s Juma Mosque.

One of the oldest Muslim shrines on the territory of Azerbaijan, and in the South Caucasus and the Middle East as a whole, the Shamakhy Juma Mosque was built in 743 by caliph Khalid ibn Valiad in honour of his brother Muslim ibn Valiad’s coming to Azerbaijan. A genocide act was committed in Shamakhy too during the killings committed by armed Armenian dashnaks in March of 1918. The biggest massacre occurred in Juma Mosque. 1700 innocent Shamakhy residents who found shelter in the mosque were killed by Armenians, setting the mosque on fire. Due to the fact that the mosque was not used during the Soviet time for purpose, it faced the peril of being destroyed. Following the instruction and initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev, who had shown great care and attention towards development of Azerbaijan in all spheres, including protection of our national spiritual values, this historical monument was repaired in 1980.

The Shamakhy Juma Mosque was later basically repaired in the framework of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s project “Address of tolerance - Azerbaijan”.
