Presentation of the Mugham Encyclopaedia of Azerbaijan takes place in Moscow

Presentation of the Mugham Encyclopedia of Azerbaijan published  by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation took place in Rakhmaninov Hall of the P.I.Chaykovski Moscow State Conservatoire. President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva is the chairperson of the book’s editorial staff and the chief editor. 


The presentation took place within the framework of the 7th International Scientific Conference “World Nations’ Music: Research Problems” organized with participation of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) under UNESCO, which was devoted to the 150th anniversary of the Moscow State Conservatoire.


Honoured Person of Art of Azerbaijan, author and compiler of the encyclopaedia Surayya Aghayeva thanked Mehriban Aliyeva for the great assistance and support  she has provided to this significant project. 


S.Aghayeva talked about the general concept, structure of the publication and its difference from the encyclopaedia printed prior to this one. According to her, the known base information developed by a number of Azerbaijani and foreign music experts have been collected and systemized in this encyclopaedia. Many illustrations with ancient music notes, pieces of music from treatises related to middle ages, photos of old music instruments, photos from archives etc. have been included in the publication. 


Professor of the Cambridge University (the Great Britain) Jurgen Elsner, director of the research group for Turkic cultures music of ICTM Raziya Sultanova, head of ICTM’s “Makam” research group Alexander Jumayev (Uzbekistan),  doctor of art Gultakin Shamilli (Moscow), editor of the publication, head of the musical editorial board of “Bolshaya Rossiyskaya Encyclopedia” Olga Frayonova delivered a speech. It was recommended that the encyclopaedia be translated into the English and Arabic languages.


At the end of the presentation, advisor to Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia for humanitarian affairs Nigar Akhundova took the floor. Then she presented the publication “Garabagh Khanendleri” (Singers of Garabagh – disks with information material) published with support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva to the library of the Moscow State Conservatoire.


The presentation ceremony was finalized by Azerbaijani mughams performed by Honoured Artist Valeh Rahimov.
