Yukhary Govhar Agha Mosque in the city of Shusha was restored by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

The mosque’s author is famous architect Kerbalayi Safikhan Garabaghi. Ornaments of the minarets and circular drawings in the rooms were made by poet, artist and calligrapher Mir Mohsun Navvab Garabaghi, who had lived and created in Shusha. Restoration works here started towards the end of 2021.

While the city of Shusha was under occupation, Yukhary Govhar Agha Mosque was destroyed by Armenians. The conservation and restoration works launched at the mosque after the city was liberated from the occupation were carried out by a consortium of Azerbaijani, Italian and Turkish companies, under the supervision of Austrian company “Wehdorn Architekten”, maintaining the preliminary architectural style. The project was realized by financial support of PASHA Holding.

Rock slabs brought to Baku from Shusha city were cut in a workshop to make window frames and necessary figures. Works on painting and application of protection layers on the minarets were completed, and the mosque’s roof cover was constructed.

The restoration works covered also the building of madrasa. Works on construction of a wooden roof structure of the madrasa were completed. Works on demolition of the existing flooring and removal of wastes are finished.
