Following the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative and with financial support from the state of Azerbaijan, the “Friendship Park” in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was reconstructed. On February 24, 2012, Vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva attended the opening ceremony.

Reconstruction works in the park located on Dobrinja River’s bank started in November 2011. All conditions have been created for residents’ rest in a park covering 1 ha area. A bridge linking the “Friendship Park” with Dobrinja Education Complex located on the other bank of the river has been built. National ornaments of Azerbaijan and Bosnia-Herzegovina have been used in the design of the bridge.

A monument complex has been erected in the park in memory of the victims of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and of the genocide committed in Khojaly town of Azerbaijan in February 1992. This project has been implemented following the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative, with financial support from the state of Azerbaijan and assistance by Novi Grad Municipality of Sarajevo and the diplomatic representation of Azerbaijan in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
