The project "Provision of soldiers and officers wounded in the April 2016 battles with high-tech artificial limbs"

On April 3, presentation of the project "Provision of soldiers and officers wounded in the April 2016 battles with high-tech artificial limbs" took place with participation of First Vice-president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva.


In the framework of the project, our soldiers and officer wounded in the battles have been provided with high-tech products of the world’s producers of state-of-the-art prosthetic limbs such as Germany’s “Ottobock”, Iceland’s “Össur”, Great Britain’s “RSL Steeper”, and USA’s “Fillauer”.


Preparation of prosthetic limbs started on April 3. Appropriate works were carried out over the course of 20 days on the project, and prosthetic limbs were put on the amputated motor parts of the military men .


Taking into consideration each soldier and officer’s individual features, their degree of activity in particular, their lifestyle, employment and individual requirements of each user for prosthetic limb, high quality prosthetic limbs were made.


The primary objective of the project was to ensure that soldiers and officers wounded in April 2016 battles are able lead an active life.


One of the artificial limbs to be put on soldiers and officers is the “Harmony P3” active vacuum system prosthesis of Germany’s “Ottobock” company, which is suitable for the cases of under-knee amputations.


An active vacuum device built between the socket and the dynamic carbon leg of this prosthesis creates negative pressure between the amputation stump and the socket, and due to this negative pressure, the leg and the prosthesis are maximum adapted to each other. As a result, the leg and the prosthesis become a single unit, and the user feels the artificial limb as the continuation of his own leg and makes steps more easily and confidently. Another essential feature of the negative pressure created by the active vacuum system is that it improves blood circulation in the stump, which, in turn, ensures its quick recovery. The active vacuum-system prosthesis has damping and rotation features, which ensures that the artificial limb adapts to different ground surfaces while in motion.


Dynamic “Triton” carbon leg has been installed in the “Harmony P3” system to make its use easier, which, in turn, has a unique feature of stimulating each next step.


The trans-femoral prosthesis with “C-leg microprocessor” control system is an electronic knee joint improved by engineers of Germany’s “Ottobock” Company. So, the “C-leg” specialists, relying on the biomechanical features of the musculoskeletal [locomotor] system, have ensured maximum consistency of the movement using the prosthesis with a human’s natural motion. There are two highly sensitive sensors built in the “C-leg ” knee joint, and through these sensors, motor signal received from the ground while in motion are conveyed to the microprocessor control system, and adaptation to changing grounds is ensured while in motion.


The “C-leg” prosthesis has a special software, and 3 different functions corresponding to the user’s requirements may be uploaded into the prosthesis through this software. For example: free movement, running, and riding a bicycle.


Silicon cosmetic leg prostheses are appropriate for Syme, Chopart and Lisfranc amputations of the lower limb and are made of natural silicon with no harmful and allergic effect. Silicon cosmetic leg prostheses are made individually, in accordance with the user’s skin colour and the leg’s anatomic shape. They do not differ much from a natural leg, with very easy in use and putting on.


 “BeBionic 3” 6-channel bionic trans-humeral upper limb prosthesis is a make of the Great Britain’s RSL Steeper Company, and is a bionic hand prosthesis most widely applied in the world due to its functionality and easiness of use.


“BeBionic 3” upper limb prosthesis conveys motor signals received from the brain to the microprocessor control system through two sensitive electrodes built into the prosthesis. Signals received in the control system are, after being processed, transferred to the motors built in the prosthesis. These motors, taking care of independent motion of each finger, ensures different motions that the user may benefit from in the daily life. The wrist joint of “BeBionic 3” upper limb prosthesis too has an electronic control system with the ability to turn 360 degrees. The knee joint being used in above-elbow amputations too has possibilities of opening and folding up.




In 2018, 6 invalids of the Garabagh War were provided with “Harmony P3” prostheses employing an active vacuum system, 1 person with “Hybrid” transfemoral prosthesis employing a microprocessor control system, and 3 persons with “BeBionic” hand prostheses.




In 2019, each of the 30 military men who had applied to the Heydar Aliyev Foundation were provided with high-tech products, taking into account their features, the degree of activity, and lifestyle.
