The Khojaly Genocide Memorial in Khojaly city was realized based on the concept developed by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
The Memorial has been created according to the Resolution signed by President Ilham Aliyev in February 2025, with a view to eternalizing the memory of the Khojaly genocide victims, conveying the historical facts to future generations, and preserving the national identity.
The monolith surrounding the memorial from four sides has been designed in the form of symbolic hands trying to protect Khojaly citizens from genocide.
As a sign of respect for the victims of the Khojaly genocide, almond trees flowering at the end of winter and being a messenger of spring were planted in the Memorial’s yard.
The Memorial consists of four sections. In the first two sections was created an exposition hall eternalizing the memory of Khojaly victims.
The exposition welcomes visitors by the installation “The Image of Tragedy”.
Models of pigeon flying along the ceiling of the exposition are the symbol of respect for innocent citizens who were massacred during the Khojaly tragedy, wishing peace to the whole world.
At the expositions entitled “Khojaly – traces of ancient civilizations”, “The Khojaly genocide is a crime against humanity” and “Do not forget Khojaly!” are demonstrated the history of Khojaly, the occupation geography, the chronology of the conflict, violation of international legal norms, information about the Khojaly genocide, one of the bloodiest crimes against humanity, and the political and legal assessment of the genocide by National Leader Heydar Aliyev.
The Khojaly model in the exposition hall presents information about the horrors happened on the day of tragedy in the interactive format.
In the second exposition hall are presented the installation “Homes that remained silent in a matter of one night” by Sarkhan Hajiyev and the fate of 8 families completely massacred during the tragedy, the lives, dreams ended in one night as a result of the crime against humanity, and the silenced laughter of children through videos developed using AI.
Models of monuments erected in several countries in memory of the genocide victims in the framework of the campaign “Justice for Khojaly” are also displayed here.
There is an assembly hall in the next section of the memorial designed to hold official events and remembering ceremonies.
