On May 15, the Baku Marathon was held on the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. About 15 thousand participants competed at the “Baku Marathon 2022”. Along with Azerbaijani citizens, foreigners living and working in Azerbaijan, as well as people from a number of other countries had applied to participate in the marathon. Participants from USA, Germany, UAE, the Great Britain, China, France, Cameroon, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uganda etc. were among those registered for participation.
Held under the slogan “Win the Wind” for the fifth time, the Baku Marathon was this time held along a different route. Both the start and the finish points were on the State Flag Square.
Persons with Down syndrome and those with physical restrictions also took part in the Marathon. First start was made for persons with Down syndrome, with the second one being for physically restricted people. The 3rd start was for general participants.
Winners of the Baku Marathon 2022 were chosen on two categories. Men and women competed for first three places on the marathon route. The winner of the 1st place was rewarded with 3000 AZN, while the winners of the 2nd and 3rd places received 2000 AZN and 1000 AZN, accordingly, being additionally awarded medals and certificates.
Winners among men: 1st place – Rinas Akhmadeyev (Russia), 2nd place – Omar Alkan (Turkey), 3rd place – Vladimir Marchik (Czech Republic).
Winners among women: 1st place – Valentina Veretskaya (Ukraine), 2nd place – Dilek Ozturk (Turkey), 3rd place – Valentina Poltavskaya (Ukraine).
1000 participants who have crossed the Finish line were awarded special medals of Baku Marathon 2022. There were also new nominations at Baku Marathon 2022: winners on 5 age categories were chosen among men and women (18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+).
An entertainment zone was created on the Flag Square for marathon participants, residents of the city, and the guests. Here were held various entertaining and concert programmes, competitions, as well as sports events during the competition.
The Baku Marathon aims to support the development of sports, and promotion of a healthy lifestyle.
