With a view to more broadly and effectively demonstrating carpets − one of the rare treasures of our country− a decision was taken,by a relevant Resolution of President Ilham Aliyev, to construct a stand-alone building for the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, and on 15 May 2008, a ceremony of laying the foundation of the building took place in the Seaside National Park.

On 26 August 2014, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva attended the inauguration of the museum.

The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum named after Latif Karimov has been constructed with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, and UNESCO.

Author of the building− resembling a folded carpet− is well-known Austrian architect Franz Jantz. The building accommodates an exhibition hall, a library, an embroidery and weaving centre, a souvenir and book stand, a meetings and audio-visual presentation room, as well as an area in the open air to display statues and carpets.

A unique collection consisting of all directions of the Azerbaijani carpet-making school, broad assortment of hundreds of years-old carpets and carpet products, metal items, fabric, garments and embroidery, ceramics, glass, wood, paper, jewellery, books is demonstrated at the museum. At the moment, over 13 thousand 300 exhibits and items are preserved at the museum.

Preservation and conservation of carpets and carpet products being kept in the museums are ensured on the basis of recommendations and instructions by Luis Squirer, a specialist with rich experience in this sphere, an expert of the world-renowned Victoria and Albert Museum for conservation of fabrics, who had been invited to Baku in 2013.
