The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has finished the current repair and restoration works carried out at the Saint Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Baku city. While performing restoration works at the catholic church, where hundreds of Catholic offer their prayers, the roof was basically repaired, ensuring its hydraulic sealing.
The church was constructed in 1912. In 1934, after the Bolshevikk came to power, this church was destroyed, as with other religious temples. After Azerbaijan regained independence, following the instruction of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, an area was allocated for the construction of a new church in Baku for Catholics who needed a religious temple. The Saint Virgin Mary Catholic Church was commissioned in March 2008.
Based on the cooperation between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Roman Catholic religious community, in September 2008, the glasses of the catholic church’s suspended ceiling were replaced with artistic glasses finished in a religious theme and classical stained- glass technique, installing, at the same time, a ceramic panel on the temple’s façade.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Roman Catholic community provides for, along with realizing development and reconstruction projects on the areas determined, assisting objects of social and religious nature, also holding events aiming at ethnic-cultural advancement of the peoples settled in Azerbaijan.
