Azerbaijan’s national pavilion at “Milan Expo-2015” World Exhibition was, after being disassembled, brought to Baku, and reassembled on the territory of the Seaside National Park.

On October 8, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva became familiarized with the pavilion.

Executive Director of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Anar Alakbarov gave information to President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva about the reassembled pavilion.

This building has been adapted for permanent use in all seasons on the territory of the Seaside National Park. Installations promoting Azerbaijan’s cuisine, music and culture have been assembled here, with necessary possibilities provided for various catering services to function, and a terrace.

With the organizational support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Heydar Aliyev Centre, for the first time Azerbaijan participated in the “Milan Expo 2015” World Exhibition with a national pavilion. This project has played a great role in promoting Azerbaijan’s history and cultural heritage, the country’s rich ecological and energy potential, as well as rare biodiversity on an international scale. Running from May 31 through to October 31, the “Milan Expo 2015” Exhibition has been visited by over 23 million people. In the course of this period, over 3 million 250 thousand people visited the Azerbaijani pavilion. The four-storied national pavilion, called “Azerbaijan: The treasure of biodiversity”, had been arranged on a 1,800 square-metre area in Milan. Azerbaijan was among those countries that had been chosen in all stages of the “Milan Expo 2015” World Exhibition. Foreign media, including Italy’s leading mass media, mentioned that Azerbaijan had been the leader in the accomplishment of construction and design works for the national pavilion, and therefore, our pavilion was called the pearl of the Milan exhibition. One of the unique features of the national pavilion was that it had been made of three biospheres. Made of special glass structures 10 metres in diameter, the biosphere embodied Azerbaijan, which could keep and preserve the harmony of the environment and ancient culture.

A restaurant had functioned on the fourth floor of the pavilion during the exhibition. Samples of the Azerbaijani cuisine and concert programmes were presented here. Various materials related to music and cinematographic treasures of Azerbaijan, its customs and traditions, and art were demonstrated on the monitors installed in the pavilion. Visitors watched also video trailers reflecting rich biodiversity, rare landscapes, natural reserves and historical monuments existing in various regions of Azerbaijan. During the time of holding this exhibition, Azerbaijan’s national pavilion was declared by the Organizing Committee of the “Milan Expo 2015” Exhibition the winner on the nomination of “Design and materials”. The Organizing Committee had mentioned that innovative use of sun rays reducing glass, metal and wood systems in the design of the Azerbaijani pavilion was significant in ecological terms. In short, our pavilion was constructed using ecologically clean and easily workable materials.

The draft design of the national pavilion of Azerbaijan to be assembled in the Dubai Expo 2020 Exhibition was presented here to President Ilham Aliyev. Having become acquainted with the design, the president gave relevant instruction with regard to starting the construction of the national pavilion for the Dubai Expo 2020. At the same time, the Head of the State gave instructions on considering the issue of returning the national pavilion in the Dubai Expo 2020 to our country, after the exhibition was over.

The administrative building of the reassembled national pavilion, which had been disassembled after the Milan Expo 2015 exhibition was over, comprises 4 floors, covering the area of 6 thousand square metres. A green zone has been laid out here, in an area of 4 thousand square metres, with trees and different plants, for our fellow citizens, as well as guests of our city to rest, with several recreation areas. The soil in the area has been fertilized, state-of-the-art illumination system installed, play grounds created, and a parking area allocated for cars and bikes. The pavilion is one of the projects intended to create modern recreation corners for our fellow citizens and the guests of the city.

Azerbaijan’s national pavilion in the Milan Expo 2015 Exhibition reflected the matchless natural and cultural treasures of our country, which has been playing the role of a bridge between the North and South, the East and West, distinguished for its old history and rich culture. Each detail in its creation has been shown special attention. Wavy wood walls of the pavilion are symbolic of wind, typical of Azerbaijan, and the cultural and creative tendency always dominating here.
