9th Mugham TV Contest is launched

On May 13, the 9th Mugham TV Contest was launched at the International Mugham Centre, enjoying the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Juvenile and young performers are participating in the contest organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Azerbaijani Television.

 

Renowned khanende, People’s Artist Mansum Ibrahimov informed that 10 underage and 20 grown-up performers participate in the project. Trips were organized in the course of three month to regions and, as a result, talented young performers were selected. “I think we have revealed a lot of new and interesting voices. This would gladden both us and our people. New life is breathed into our mugham, which would greatly contribute to its development”,- underscored Mansum Ibrahimov.  

 

People’s Artist Vamig Mammadaliyev noted that this year was the 20th anniversary of the contest. According to him, over the course of these years, a number of talented performers were raised thanks to the Mugham TV Contest, worthily representing our mugham today.

 

“President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva have been showing great attention towards our culture and, in particular, to our mugham. Mugham is the fundamental music of the Azerbaijani people”, - added the People’s artist.

 

Hosts of the evening Mumtaz Khalilzade and Khadija Sanangyzy brought to attention that 30 finalists were chosen this year from among 200 contenders. The competition will be aired live on the Azerbaijani Television and the Culture TV, twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. First juvenile then young performers’ competitions will take place, and winners will be determined on each category.

 

On the day of the contest’s inauguration, a video material with valuable thoughts of President Ilham Aliyev expressed at the Aghdam Mugham Centre’s inauguration ceremony was presented.

 

On the first day of the contest, 13 contenders demonstrated their skills. The Jury, having carefully analysed each performance, evaluated them on the 10-point system. The contest is planned to be held in the course of 15 weeks, including the performances in regions of the republic.  

 

Among the members of the contest’s Jury are Melekkhanum Eyyibova, Mansum Ibrahimov, Nazaket Teymurova, Sakina Ismayilova, Sardar Farajov, Vamig Mammadaliyev, and Honoured Person of Culture Ilgar Fahmi.

 

The contest is held by two age categories: 8 to 16 and 16 to 30. 30 singers chosen on the basis of castings held in Baku and regions during 3 months are participating in the contest.

 

Contest participants perform ghazals of classic and contemporary Azerbaijani poets by branches of mugham, singing also popular songs, tasnifs, and zarb-mughams.

 

The closing concert of the 9th Mugham TV Contest and rewarding of the winners are expected to take place at the end of August.

 

Held on the initiative and with the support of President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva, these mugham contests have made significant contribution to revealing the creative potential of young performers, keeping popular music alive and conveying it to future generations, and promoting the Azerbaijani mugham throughout the world.

 

The Mugham TV Contest has been held since 2005, enjoying the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. This year is the 20th anniversary of the contest.
