In 2007 A Tree Per Person campaign was launched by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation with a view to improving the environment and enhancing the ecological situation. By planting 20 thousand saplings of evergreen trees in the abandoned areas of Baku’s suburbs, the Foundation initiated a project that got a broad public response indeed. Within a short period of time, this initiative was widely supported all over Azerbaijan in a form of landscape gardening campaigns that resulted in over a million trees and shrubs planted in the country.
